Pineapple is a tropical fruit with high nutritive value and fine flavour. Vazhakulam pineapple locally known as 'Kannarachakka' comes under the species Ananas comosus. The average fruit weight is 1300-1600 g. The fruit has a pleasant aroma, fruit shape is slightly conical, fruit 'eyes' deeply placed, fruit flesh is crisp and golden yellow in color, juice is sweet with 14-16o brix and its acidity is 0.50 - 0.70%. It is a good source of carotene, vitamins, minerals and energy.
India produces more than 8% of total world production of pineapple. The major pineapple producing states in India are Assam, West Bengal, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala and Bihar. Currently, India produces 1.53 million tonnes of pineapple with productivity of 15.3 t/ha.
There is sizeable increase in acreage and production of pineapple in India. In acreage, there is an increase from 87 thousand ha in 2006-07 to 89 thousand ha in 2010-11.Similarly the production has increased from 1,362.00 thousand tons in 2006-07 to 1,415.00 thousand tons in 2010-11.
